Our Physicians

In 2001 Internal Medicine Specialists brought together some of the most respected internal medicine physicians from the area. Located on the campus of Brookwood Medical Center, the practice is able to take advantage of the many physician specialists located nearby. Our board certified physicians are:

Charles C. Boackle, M.D.

Dr. Charles Boackle, an Alabama native, graduated from Auburn University in 1975 with a degree in Pharmacy. After entering the field of pharmacy, he elected to return to school and obtained his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. Dr. Boackle is one of the founding physicians of Internal Medicine Specialists. Dr. Boackle currently serves as the Laboratory Director for the practice. Dr. Boackle is married, the father of two children, and enjoys gardening and swimming.

Robert M. Frederickson, M.D., FACP

Dr. Robert M. Frederickson graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Chemistry in 1976 and performed post graduate studies in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alabama at Birmingham from 1977- 1982. After beginning a career in engineering, he returned to school at the University of Alabama where he obtained his medical degree. He specializes in hypertension and hyperlipidemia and was one of the founding physicians of Internal Medicine Specialists, P.C. in 2001. Dr. Frederickson is commissioned by pharmaceutical companies as a professional speaker, and he has served as the Chief of Staff for Brookwood Medical Center from 2003-2004. He is married and the father of two children. He enjoys water sports, snow skiing, and jeep safaris during his leisure time.

Larry Gazzini, M.D.

Dr. Larry Gazzini obtained a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and interned and performed his residency at the Baptist Medical Centers in Birmingham. Dr. Gazzini entered private practice before becoming a founding partner of Internal Medicine Specialists and practicing emergency medicine. He is married with three children and plays tennis and bowls in his spare time.

Joshua D. Ivker, M.D.

Dr. Ivker, who was born in Louisiana, received his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from the University of Colorado in Boulder in 1994. He then returned to Louisiana and earned his medical degree from Louisiana State University in New Orleans. Dr. Ivker performed his internship and residency at the Baptist Medical Centers, serving as Chief Resident his last year. Married and the father of three boys, Dr. Ivker enjoys photography, choral music, cycling, skiing and is an active member of the Birmingham Jewish community.

David J. Kimbrell, M.D.

Dr. David Kimbrell graduated from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia, and then returned to Alabama to complete his Internship and Residency at Carraway Methodist Medical Center. Dr. Kimbrell has practiced medicine on the Brookwood Medical Center campus and was one of the founding physicians of Internal Medicine Specialists. Dr. Kimbrell is married and the father of four children. He enjoys all outdoor sports activities and researching native American artifacts.

LaDonna P. Richardson, M.D.

Dr. Richardson received her B.S. Degree in biology and her medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She completed both her Internship and Residency at Carraway Methodist Medical Center, where she was the Chief Resident during her last year. Dr. Richardson was in practice on the Carraway and Medical Center East campuses before joining Internal Medicine Specialists in early 2006. A native of Alabama, Dr. Richardson enjoys music, painting, reading, hiking, and camping. She is married and the mother of two children.

David J. Riddle, M.D.

Dr. Riddle joined Internal Medicine Specialists on January 16, 2013. Born in Cambridge, England, Dr. Riddle came to Birmingham after several years in Missouri. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia and in 2001 the University of Missouri School of Medicine. He went on to Washington University School of Medicine to pursue a Fellowship in Internal Medicine and Pediatric Infectious Diseases while also serving as Chief Resident. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine – Infectious Diseases, and Pediatrics – Infectious Diseases. Dr. Riddle and his wife now call Birmingham home.

Todd K. Schultz, M.D.

Dr. Schultz, who was born in Wisconsin, obtained his undergraduate degree in Microbiology from the University of Georgia. He then relocated to Alabama where he received his medical degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Dr. Schultz practiced in the medical community of Brookwood Medical Center before helping establish Internal Medicine Specialists in 2001. He is married and the father of two children. Dr. Schultz is a member of a contemporary recording band and is an accomplished pianist.

Roxanne R. Travelute, M.D.

Dr. Travelute is originally from Hanover, Kansas. She graduated with honors from the University of Kansas with a degree in Pharmacy, and from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. She did her Internship and Residency training at Duke University, and stayed on faculty until moving to Birmingham. She has been in private practice in Homewood for the past 20 years. She has been active in the state Medical Association, and was President of the Jefferson County Medical Society in 2016. Her name has consistently been listed on the Best Doctors of Birmingham. She enjoys spending time with her husband and two children.

Andrea R. White, M.D.

Dr. White is a native of Virginia. She attended the University of Virginia, where she was an Echols Scholar and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. Following college, she moved to Spain where she lived for nearly eight years and graduated from medical school at the Universidad de Oviedo Facultad de Medicina. She returned to the United States in 2001 and did an Internal Medicine residency through the University of Virginia/Roanoke-Salem program. She subsequently completed a two-year Geriatrics and Palliative Care fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, followed by a post-doctoral research year. She transitioned into private practice doing sub-acute rehabilitation medicine and hospice medical director work, followed by hospital work and outpatient practice through SeniorCare Geriatrics. She joined Internal Medicine Specialists in January of 2014 and has enjoyed returning to general internal medicine where she takes care of all age groups. Dr. White is married, has two children and two dogs. She loves animals, enjoys the mountains and the ocean, and likes to garden and cook. She is bilingual in English and Spanish.
